D3.1 Case studies on Translation in Industry 4.0 Research

This report represents case studies on research translation in industry 4.0 from Croatia, Spain and Italy. Case study from Croatia represents the collaboration between Končar – Electrical Engineering Institute and Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing which resulted in innovation – a smart piece of electronics that enable more safe driving in the public urban rail traffic. The university and industry collaboration (UIC) was a result of a project called SafeTram – System for increased driving safety in public urban rail traffic. The main goal of this project was to develop autonomous driving system that will increase traffic safety and lower the number of accidents. Fab Lab Barcelona is connected to a network of 1800 Fab Labs around the world. Mostly, they are collaborating with students and citizens since they are situated inside the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC). Fab Lab emphasized their collaboration with companies such as IKEA and local LEKA restaurant. It was highlighted how trust is one of the most important things when sharing their knowledge and that it is much easier to collaborate with partners with similar organizational culture. Italy is among the top European players in terms of high-tech companies, both in the manufacturing and the service sectors, thus representing also a key innovative player. Tuscany Region has invested for the development of specific tools capable of assessing the level of maturity of its companies with respect to Industry 4.0, also providing services to help companies to further digitalize.
