Seconded from the University of Vaasa (Finland) to RMIT Europe (Barcelona)

Hafiz’s research interests include CircularEconomy, sustainability, renewable energy production, and geospatial data for reducing climate impact.

Hafiz's secondment experience:

He was seconded to RMIT Europe, in Barcelona, for one month in February 2023, adn here he shares his experience with us:

  • If you could provide one piece of advice to anyone thinking about doing a secondment, what would it be?

It is very important to think about the time period of your secondment. Spending a reasonable amount of time could benefit greatly to your research objectives.

  • What is something new that has been embedded into your approach to your research as a result of your secondment, how has the secondment impacted your research?

The experimental part of a research project from a multidisciplinary perspective is something new that I learned during my secondment. This is something I will take under consideration in all my future research.

  • Can you give us an example of a tangible knowledge transfer / exchange that took place during your secondment?

I was discussing about the climate impact from fertilizers and biochar products with local researchers in Barcelona. At UPC, they look at the ground level measurable impact of fertilizers in agricultural sector. We also came to an understanding that this can also be done with geospatial data (remote sensing with satellite). I consider this to be a tangible knowledge transfer during my secondment because both of these data can be compared.

  • What was the most valuable aspect of your secondment?

People. Discussing research project with various people enhances the ability to look deeper than you already have. It also gives time to improve your understanding on the subject matter from various point of views.
