Tania is a research assistant at INESC TEC in the Visual Computing and Machine Intelligence (VCMI) research group. Her research is focused on the development of novel AI-based solutions for cancer characterization. Currently, her main focus is the development of multimodal and causal learning models, trying to integrate several sources of the data and mimic the diagnosis performed by the clinicians, and taking into consideration causal relations for more accurate predictions. Lung cancer has been the main case study. In this cancer, the mutational status of the main oncogenes (EGFR and KRAS) is fundamental for the treatment plan. AI models that use medical imaging and clinical data to predict these biomarkers (instead of biopsy) will allow a fast and less invasive diagnosis, improving the chances of the treatment.
